Details
EDEN Organic Refried Black Beans are made of certified organic black turtle beans grown on USA family owned farms in mineral rich, vital soil, tended by those committed to a clean environment and to providing the safest, most nutritious and delicious food.
To make EDEN Organic Refried Black Beans, black turtle beans Phaseolus vulgaris are washed and soaked overnight. The beans are blanched and most of them are ground into a thick puree. Whole black beans are then mixed with the puree, lightly salted with sea salt from the environmentally protected waters of Algarve, Portugal, and expertly cooked with purified water at Eden's certified organic and kosher cannery in East central Indiana.
EDEN Organic Beans are packed in steel cans coated with a baked on oleoresinous c-enamel that does not contain the endocrine disrupter chemical, bisphenol-A (BPA). Oleoresin is a natural mixture of an oil and a resin extracted from various plants, such as pine or balsam fir. These cans cost 14% more than the industry standard cans that do contain BPA. The can maker, Ball Corporation, tells us that Eden is the only U.S. food maker to date to use these BPA free cans and we have been since April 1999.
The world's largest men's magazine, Men's Health, has twice selected EDENRefried Beans as the best for flavor and nutrition among all other brands of refried beans.
EDEN Beans also received the highest ranking for flavor and nourishment three times in studies conducted by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), as published in their Nutrition Action Newsletter. Recently EDENRefried Beans were rated as their Best Buy and number one for nutrition among 38 brands (salt added). Child Magazine also rated EDEN Beans as the favorite of children and parents alike.
Most commercial refried beans are made with inferior harsh salt and the sodium levels, even in most organic brands, are extremely high to mask the flavor of inferior quality or older beans. High fat refried beans often use inferior quality vegetable oil and/or lard. Some commercial brands use the chemical preservatives BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole) and BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene). EDEN Organic Refried Beans contain half the sodium of all other brands allowing the delicious flavor of our organic beans to shine through. All EDEN Refried Beans are low fat, containing only the healthy fat that is naturally present in beans, and all contain absolutely no preservatives or processing chemicals.
According to the FDA, "Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol and rich in fruits, vegetables, and grain products that contain some types of dietary fiber, particularly soluble fiber, may reduce the risk of heart disease, a disease associated with many factors," and "Low fat diets rich in fiber-containing grain products, fruits, and vegetables may reduce the risk of some types of cancer, a disease associated with many factors." EDEN Organic Refried Black Beans are rich in dietary fiber (3 grams of soluble and 4 grams of insoluble), low fat, saturated fat and cholesterol free. They're a good source of potassium, protein, iron, phosphorus, and magnesium.
Studies show beans contain a wealth of antioxidants similar to those in fruits and berries. "Beans are really loaded with antioxidant compounds," said Clifford Beninger, Ph.D., an environmental biologist and former researcher for the USDA's Bean Research Unit. "We didn't know how potent they were until now. In general darker colored seed coats were associated with higher levels of flavonoids, and therefore higher antioxidant activity." Researchers tested the antioxidant activity of flavonoids found in 12 common varieties of dry beans. They found one class of compounds in particular, anthocyanins, were the most active antioxidants in beans. These findings add antioxidant activity to a growing list of healthy compounds found in beans and legumes. The study was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
Use EDEN Organic Refried Black Beans the same as you would any refried bean, as a party snack, heated and served with salsa and organic corn chips, and as a filling for tacos, tortillas, and burritos. Great for making creamy soups, and a perfect side dish. To heat, place a small amount of water and/or oil in a saucepan or skillet, add the beans, mix thoroughly, cover and simmer until creamy and hot. Vegetables such as onions, peppers and sweet corn are delicious when sautéed before adding the beans.
