The tamanu tree (Calophyllum inophyllum) is indigenous to tropical Southeast Asia, where it grows wild both on the coast and inland. In order to release the precious oils contained within, the kernel must be left to dry in the sun for about a month or two, where it will then become covered with a rich, dark, and very sticky oil.
