One of the leading causes of cellular breakdown is free radical damage and antioxidants are crucial to help protect against these deleterious effects. Alpha-Lipoic acid (ALA) R+ is the only antioxidant that is both fat- and water-soluble.[1] This is important because ALA can access all parts of living cells, giving it the ability to trap free radicals and protect against oxidation.[1] Also, ALA R+ is one of the few substances that can cross the blood-brain barrier.[2]

ALA constitutes an equal proportion of the R-(natural) and S-(unnatural) enantiomers that are mirror images of each other, also called a ‘racemic’ mixture.[1,2] ALA R+ SAP provides the natural form consisting only of the R(+) isomer, which is much more bioavailable than the standard ALA.[2] R-ALA and its reduced counterpart, dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA), are a potent antioxidant pair. Studies show that ALA has the ability to regenerate vitamin C, coenzyme Q10, glutathione, and vitamin E.[3,4,5] Unlike ascorbic acid, DHLA can be recycled from ALA, and therefore is not destroyed by quenching free radicals.[1,2]

Based on one study, there is a suggestion that ALA may reduce the amount of biotin in the body and hence biotin is added to this formulation to potentially alleviate biotin deficiency.[6]

ALA R+ SAP can:
  • Help improve antioxidants status in the body for optimal health.[1,2]
  • Help regenerate vitamin C, coenzyme Q10, glutathione, and vitamin E [3,4,5]
